INTRODUCTION
THE TEA PARTY AND AMERICA’S 70 YEAR ITCH IN POLITICS
The Tea Party is a determined amalgamation of patriots exercising a relentless “Spirit of 1776″ with a single-minded focus that this nation is worth saving. The Tea Party has a hands-on-approach that it must get involved in all levels of politics including local, state, and national races. The mantra throughout the Tea Party movement is let’s git ‘er done!
Across the nation from Alaska to Florida and from the western shores of Hawaii to the eastern shores of Maine patriots are committing themselves to crack open the rock of the status quo in both major political parties. The Tea Party wants to throw out the old and bring in a new stability and predictability based on the United States Constitution. The Tea Party wants protection for our liberties and if that means washing off the dried mud and crud left by those who have trampled our beloved constitution, then blessed be the ones willing to clean our framework for freedom.
The Tea Party is committed to total satisfaction within the confines of “we the people in order to bring about a more perfect union…” The Tea Party puts all pundits on notice that it intends to exceed all expectations. It is doing this by listening to the people and understanding that the status quo has got to go. Heave ho! The status quo has got to go! “We the people” are in control. Yes, we can bring real change as the elites go fry their brains. The American people will decide which direction this nation will go. We believe in making this country the best that it can be. We will respect all people, but that does not mean we will continue to allow the status quo to roll over us again and again. We are determined to make sure the people employed by our government are held accountable to deliver what they have promised to do with no excuses!
With history and passion as guides, the Tea Party is committed to the journey in the pursuit of excellence with a dedication to the founding principles of our nation. The Tea Party’s actions should be in total alignment with our Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Every candidate for office will not be perfect as no naturally born person has ever been, but the Tea Party expects every office holder and candidate to be subject to accountability, strict standards, and an uncompromising integrity. Those who reach elected office should fully understand that such an honor comes with responsibility and that trust should not be breached.
The American people have a unique history of being able to stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. The Tea Party recognizes that we as a people are indeed blessed by those who have prepared the way for where we are today. Yet in the past generation our leaders have consistently failed to keep this nation from a progressively overbearing debt burden that simply is not sustainable. Leaders present and past in both major political parties are guilty! With a bold stand to go where no one else dares to go, the Tea Party is running to the fire that is burning down our country. In truth, the Tea Party is like the firefighters who rushed into the burning Twin Towers on 9-11. We want to put out the fire before our nation’s economic structures meltdown. Do we have time? We certainly need more help!
Like bucket brigades in the colonial times, the Tea Party is rushing to the fire with our buckets. The colonials in Philadelphia under the leadership of Ben Franklin and America’s first fire department came together as a community with a plan for action when a house or business caught on fire. The more citizens that heard the language of partnership and joined in the bucket brigade the more likely was the success of quenching the fire before the entire structure burned to the ground. With smoldering smoke in every corner of our country the Tea Party is sounding the alarm. In fact, the Tea Party is ringing the Liberty Bell like hell right now. And for whom does the bell toll? It tolls for thee.
You see, no person can stop an earthquake. No mere human can stop a hurricane. And no one can stop the 70 year itch in American politics. That’s right, I call it the 70 year itch in American politics! The Tea Party did not appear out of thin air. The patriots involved in the Tea Party are answering the call of history just like other Americans have done during unique times that have come just about every 70 years since the U.S. Constitution was ratified. The number of people participating in the Tea Party movement is growing and will continue to grow. Why? Let me explain.
Even as General Washington in 1781 procured victory on Surrender Field right outside of Yorktown, Virginia, our founders in the Continental Congress were floundering when it came to building a self-governing nation. It took the U.S. Constitution to finally bind the 13 independent states together. Since that time, in approximately 70 year increments (the 70 years added from the middle or end of the major conflict) America has seen a political phenomena similar to the celestial clocklike appearance of Halley’s Comet that passes near the earth every 76 years. I call it rock splitting politics. Such drama happens when catastrophic events lead to tremendous political changes that spill over into all American lives and transforms the course of the nation. The dominant political force emerging from these events leads the nation for about the next 70 years.
Toward the end of the first 70 year cycle since the U.S. Constitution was implemented, America saw the emergence of the newly established Republican Party. People actually dared to speak of all men being free including the slaves in the slaveholding states. And then the 70 year American political itch came. Its rock splitting politics crumbled the powers of the establishment during a horrifying Civil War. In the aftermath of 1865 America was changed forever. Fast forward another 70 years from 1865 to once again find our nation in another catastrophe called the Great Depression. The political stage was set once again with constant posturing between people and political strategies played out through parties and personalities in the previous 70 years. The Great Depression hit and then World War II and rock splitting politics cracked open the status quo of the time to galvanize around the progressive policies of four-time elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Women by the millions joined the workforce during the war and after the war they wanted more to do. The momentum of change carried through to break down the Jim Crow laws in the South with the modern day Civil Rights movement.
There is no better passionate, visual and historical example of rock splitting politics than the Memorial on the Mall in Washington D.C. honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Every person honored on the Mall has been a President or military hero until Americans gave this Baptist preacher a memorial on the Mall. Dr. King taught the world how to split rocks that no one thought could ever be split. Some people cried out that the rock of segregation and Jim Crow would not be broken—not even over their dead bodies. Well, well, well, this gigantic rock of racism that was forged and hardened during the years of Reconstruction in the aftermath of America’s first 70 year itch appeared unbreakable in the South. But that impenetrable mountain of racism including segregation was cracked open under the righteous leadership of Dr. King in his passionate non-violent journey for freedom. At his memorial opened in 2011 the world now sees an emerging victorious King who has split the mountain of despair as his message becomes a stone of hope. Yes, rocks can be split.
Not long before the King Memorial dedication service was to take place I spoke with my good friend Dr. Alveda King. She was planning to participate in the ceremony honoring her Uncle Martin’s memorial on the Mall. She reminded me of an important point. She told me that the memorial is to honor her Uncle Martin but not to make him an idol. Her father, A.B. King, and grandfather Martin Luther King, Sr. were all Baptist preachers like her Uncle Martin. Each spent their time here on earth risking their lives to make this world a better place, but always pointing to the way of salvation for the life to come. Alveda is not bashful in letting others know that her Uncle Martin’s faith was what made him believe that God would make a way where there was no way. And what Alveda’s Uncle Martin did was nothing less than rock splitting politics. His success brought about a holiness in the struggle for freedom.
The triumph of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to move America and give hope to oppressed people around the world was an example of the best that resulted from the rock splitting politics forged by Roosevelt and felt by a world in turmoil. But along with the seeds that bore good fruit were other seeds. Indeed, Franklin Roosevelt had within his administration progressives, some socialists, and yes, now we know that some were even communists. Seeds sown by some of these left-wingers grew into bitter weeds of despair themselves. The government’s war on poverty poured money like water into a bucket with holes in it. Scams and corruption in government run programs weakened the engines of capitalism.
Along with good intentions America saw the growing breakdowns of the family as divorces skyrocketed and children born out of wedlock shot up astronomically. Where all children born out of wedlock was 16% in the 1950’s in today’s world we have some urban and rural environments where over 80% of children are born out of wedlock! And as Dr. Alveda King points out sadly, the most dangerous place for a black child today is in the womb of his or her African American mother.
Government has grown and so has its astronomical money borrowing. In the summer of 2011 a congressional agreement approved America’s credit line from just above 14 trillion dollars to over 17 trillion dollars! America’s budget deficit has been over a trillion dollars every year President Obama has been in office. Many seeds of the progressives sown so long ago have become more than ripe. The stink of these rotting fruits today are choking the American economic engines. Simply put, the goose that lays the golden eggs is suffocating.
The national debt is like a wildfire raging. Its smoke is choking 25 million Americans looking for full time jobs. The fire is growing and its getting hotter and hotter as it is getting closer to being completely out of control. Over 45 million Americans are on food stamps. The United States credit has been downgraded from its AAA rating. The U.S. Post Office Service is on the verge of collapse. Businesses are not hiring partly because of this administration’s actions causing an environment of uncertainty. For all intents and purposes, America is now in the 21 century’s Great Depression. The sickening image that every American has seared into their brain is the image of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers imploding in New York when the Al Qaeda terrorists struck them with full fueled jets. The reason the towers finally fell was that no engineer could have envisioned for the steel support beams to have to withstand the intense heat from burning jet fuel. When the steel melted and the weight above it could not be supported we all saw the mighty towers fall as if a stack of cards. It all happened so frighteningly fast. Even though it is a heart rendering image that is exactly what will happen to the American economic infrastructure if we do not get the fires extinguished. We must start putting out the fires of the national debt!
The Tea Party has arrived on the scene in history when America is trying to wind down two long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a recent third war in Libya. The aftermath of the September 11th attacks has forever changed America’s security infrastructure. In a time when worldwide political earthquakes are happening at breathtaking speeds, America needs to influence and lead the world toward democracy. But she finds herself like a giant tied down by cords of debt as if a figure in Gulliver’s Travels. The Middle East and North Africa are in the midst of rock shattering political change as dictators are falling like dominoes in popular uprisings. France and Great Britain have taken over as international leaders in these areas of contention. Governments are changing in these countries but who is guarding their weapons of mass destruction? Terrorists who have sworn to destroy Western civilization are jockeying for positions of power in countries where some religious leaders look toward Europe as a part of a Muslim Caliphate. Leaders in Iran are constantly declaring that the entire nation of Israel should be eradicated – as they allegedly pursue nuclear weapons. In recent Egyptian protests against Israel signs written in English proclaimed that “the ovens are ready.” Without a doubt the conditions in the world and in our country have provided the fertile soil in anticipation of America’s next 70 year itch in politics.
Such events cry out for American leadership and direction even as Cuba and Latin America are ripe on the cusp of change. A resurgent Russia flexes its energy power. Economically growing China is making sweeping military build-ups unprecedented in world history by its sheer numbers of boots on the ground. Just as international events around the world require attention, at home the policies of the far left are not working. Once again we need only examine what we know. With over 25 million citizens unemployed and looking for jobs and many others forced into early retirement, the tax revenues are severely insufficient. Big spending politicians are sitting like Humpty- Dumpties without a clue of what to do. Domestically, the economy that has been pronounced for two years as being in recovery is in reality the 21st Century’s Great Depression. With over 45 million people in America on food stamps, America’s first credit downgrade given by the same people who gave junk bonds AAA ratings, and an electorate hurting for decent jobs we are witnessing conditions that cause rock splitting politics.
The President’s long anticipated jobs speech after Labor Day in 2011 was a wash. Today’s political status quo is long in tooth. Its demise is imminent. Its once ferocious teeth are now dangling from their infected foundations. Extraction time has come or in military terms some oral surgeons simply proclaim about hopeless teeth, “Let’s give ‘em the cold steel!”
Just as no one can stop an earthquake or a hurricane, no one person can solve the world’s problems. But in these catastrophic times the foundation for the next 70 year dominance in American politics is being set in place. When President Obama entered into office in January 2009 our nation owed about 10 trillion dollars. In a little over two and a half years that debt has grown to 14 trillion dollars and America’s “credit card” has been given a credit line up to just over 17 trillion dollars. America’s debt is spiraling out of control. The astounding hundreds of billions of dollars paid out each year in interest alone on the national debt boggles the mind. And each year we pay more and more interest. Farmers would say that we are now eating our seed corn. The potential for an economic national suicide is haunting. President Abraham Lincoln once said that no military power on earth could conquer us, if we as a country cease to exist, it would come about by national suicide. The sweeping far left policies of 2009 and 2010 enacted by the troika of Pelosi, Reid, and Obama have set the United States on a course toward disaster. Who can hit the re-set button for this unique and exceptional country?
Enter the Tea Party to say enough is enough! It is time for action because we are in the beginning stages of America’s third 70 year cycle of the American political itch. If one takes the approximate middle between the beginning of the Great Depression and the end of World War II and fast forwards 70 years then we realize that we are in the midst of a new 70 year American political itch. And as all citizens can now see the utter failure of the far left to run our country, dramatic political change is churning. The big spending Humpty-Dumpty politicians are being shoved off their walls of financial decadence. The Tea Party is challenging the status quo and cracking its eggheads. With a love for country, a “Spirit of 1776,” and a divine call ringing for principled change the Tea Party is emerging as the dominant force to shake up both major political parties. America’s 70 year political itch is happening now. Do you feel like scratching? Read on patriot.
